Background of the Study
Adopting eco-friendly business practices has become a global priority, driven by increasing environmental concerns and regulatory pressures. These practices involve minimizing environmental harm through sustainable operations, efficient resource use, and waste reduction (Smith et al., 2024). For small manufacturing firms, transitioning to eco-friendly practices can enhance sustainability, meet regulatory requirements, and improve brand reputation.

In Nigeria, the manufacturing sector contributes significantly to economic development but is also a major source of environmental pollution. In Jigawa State, where small manufacturing firms dominate, adopting eco-friendly practices is critical for addressing issues such as waste management and resource depletion (Usman & Bello, 2023). However, several challenges, including financial constraints and limited technical expertise, hinder the widespread adoption of these practices.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing awareness of the importance of eco-friendly practices, small manufacturing firms in Jigawa State struggle to implement them effectively. Factors such as high costs of eco-friendly technologies, lack of government support, and inadequate knowledge pose significant barriers (Ahmed & Musa, 2023).

While research on sustainable practices exists, limited studies focus on the specific challenges faced by small manufacturing firms in adopting eco-friendly operations in Jigawa State. Addressing this knowledge gap is essential for promoting sustainable development in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the eco-friendly practices currently adopted by small manufacturing firms in Jigawa State.

  2. To examine the challenges faced by small manufacturing firms in adopting eco-friendly practices.

  3. To evaluate the role of government policies and support in promoting eco-friendly practices.

Research Questions

  1. What eco-friendly practices are adopted by small manufacturing firms in Jigawa State?

  2. What challenges do small manufacturing firms face in adopting eco-friendly practices?

  3. How do government policies and support influence the adoption of eco-friendly practices?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Small manufacturing firms in Jigawa State do not adopt eco-friendly practices.

  2. Challenges do not significantly hinder the adoption of eco-friendly practices by small manufacturing firms.

  3. Government policies and support do not significantly influence the adoption of eco-friendly practices.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on small manufacturing firms in Jigawa State, analyzing their adoption of eco-friendly practices and the associated challenges. Limitations include variability in firm sizes and differences in industry-specific environmental impacts.

Definitions of Terms

  • Eco-Friendly Practices: Business operations designed to minimize environmental harm.

  • Small Manufacturing Firms: Enterprises engaged in production on a small scale, typically with limited resources.

  • Sustainability: The ability to meet current needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet theirs.
